5Our Vision For The Park

Wouldn’t it be great… if on a weekend day or after work there was a public place in the Lakes Region that both you and your beloved canine friend could enjoy, without worrying about Leash Laws?

While the idea of an off- leash dog park is not a new one… We are a local group of dog moms and dads who are trying to establish an “Off- Leash” dog park in the town of Belmont, NH.  Our overall vision for the park would include it being open and accessible to ALL residents of the Lakes Region, both year - round and seasonal.  Through the park , we are hoping to provide classes and events both fun, informative and community service oriented.

WE NEED YOUR VOICE! Here’s why:
On June 16, 2008 , The idea for the park was suggested to the Belmont Board of Selectmen  (Meeting Minutes 06/16/08)  The Selectmen were initially receptive to the idea and told us to work with the town land use office to identify a parcel or parcels of land that might suit our needs and come back to them with our short list of possible site locations.  We did just that.

On September 22, 2008, (Meeting Minutes 09/22/08) we again went before the Belmont Board of Selectmen to state our findings and tell them that we were interested in a parcel shown to us on Dutile Rd in Belmont. The Selectmen, suddenly cited concerns of liability issue against the town if an incident / accident should happen to occur at the park. We stated that we would clearly post “ at your own risk” signs and have user’s sign liability waiver’s. They shot us down.  Reginald Caldwell ( former selectmen) suggested that we partner up with the Belknap County 4H, to possibly use / rent their land.

We were unable to reach an agreement with the 4H. We met with the town's selectmen on August 17, 2009 to report on  our progress (Meeting Minutes 08/17/09).  Following their request, we also met with the Belmont Conservation Commission  (Meeting Minutes 09/02/09). The conservation commision is not able to help us. We are hoping that the selectmen will put the issue to a public vote. WE NEED YOUR HELP - iIf you want to see this park become a reality, we need your voice.

It is our belief that the town should allow for us to use in the name of recreation and equal rights for all- taxpayers ( both human and canine parents) a parcel of land .  The members of Happy Tails Dog park of the Lakes Region have and maintain to this day the willingness to care for the property and fundraise to provide essentials for the park. THIS PROJECT WOULD NOT BE FUNDED BY ANY TAX PAYER DOLLARS!

We are looking for people to get involved with our initiative. All levels of help are welcomed.  The one thing the park needs the most at the moment is a place to call home. If you, or someone you know, may have a small parcel of land that could be donated to help this effort please contact us at the email address below.
